Drama Performance of “Situ Bagendit”

Class 3A students held a drama performance of the Indonesian folklore “Situ Bagendit” as part of their practical final examination (UAS) for the Literary Criticism course. The performance aimed to assess students’ understanding of literary texts through dramatic interpretation, focusing on moral values, character analysis, and social criticism embedded in traditional literature.

The drama Situ Bagendit tells the story of a wealthy but arrogant widow whose greed and lack of empathy toward the poor ultimately lead to her downfall. Through this performance, students demonstrated their ability to interpret literary elements such as theme, characterization, conflict, and moral message, while translating critical analysis into stage performance. The use of dialogue, expressions, and staging reflected the students’ critical reading of the text.

This practical examination not only evaluated students’ academic comprehension but also enhanced their creativity, teamwork, and confidence in presenting literary works. The performance successfully showed that literary criticism can be applied beyond written analysis, allowing students to engage actively with literature through drama.
